How To Maintain Your Brows At Home

brows

Throughout the twentieth century, brows were at the forefront of beauty trends, from Jean Harlow to Brooke Shields. In recent years, elaborate and complex trends in brow design have taken over social media. We have seen IG brows and ombre brows, even the ever-present soap brow trend. If you’re like us, you cannot get enough of these trends.

But changing your brow look often means your brows will need extra maintenance to protect them from your experiments. While visiting a brow specialist like Kristie Streicher is ideal, sometimes a DIY remedy is the only affordable option.

Here are some tips on how to maintain your brows at home.

Step 1: Brush, brush, brush

Daily brushing through your brows makes all the difference. It is healthy for the hair follicles and skin beneath to brush them; think about any dead skin or oil build-up. Brushing them also helps keep a general shape for your brows and can help to grow in new hairs.

Start by brushing the front section up, keeping the follicles separated and prominent, and then brush the hairs up and over in the direction of your brow's natural angle.

Step 2: Trim

If stray hairs interfere with the style and shape of your eyebrows, or your eyebrows grow curly, you will find trimming helpful.

First, make sure your eyebrows are clean of any serums or other residue. Once your brows are clean and dry, brush your eyebrow hair straight up. As soon as you have lifted all the long hair, grab your trimming scissors. We recommend they be small and have a slight curve at the tip (these scissors are an excellent find, and they come with a spoolie!).

When all the hairs are sticking upward, trim one or two hairs at a time, and only at the tips. Less is more! Remember, you cannot put the hairs back once they are gone. Stay away from magnifying mirrors and trim little by little until the hairs are more in line with your brow shape.

Step 3: Pluck

Take a deep breath for this section. Are you ready? Repeat after us: “I don’t need to pluck every day.”

As for plucking, this step is up to your discretion and how you want your brows to look. A few sparse hairs around the tail can give the illusion of even thicker brows.

The easiest place to start is the area between your brows. Pluck directly in the center and work your way out. You don’t want to cut in too far to your brow (use the sides of your nose as a guideline). Next, you’ll pluck the hairs above your brow line. Any hair that sits by itself and doesn’t contribute to the main structure of your brow should be removed.

Now, when you reach the tail of your brow, take the most caution here. Our eyebrow hairs thin as we age, and that hair loss will begin in the sparsest area, which is the tail. Therefore, it’s crucial to keep your plucking to a minimum in this section. You only want to get the obvious strays and any hairs that catch your eye below or above your tail (keep it to one or two).

Most of all, know when to put your tweezers down. Just like with trimming, you can always go back later.

Step 4: Serum and Conditioner

Regrowing brows is a lengthy and tedious process, but the biggest key is patience.

If you desire to grow your brows, these products below can help speed up the process. You’ll want to find products with peptides, a type of amino acid that promotes brow growth and keeps brows healthy. Even if you are not seeking brow growth, these products are also excellent for conditioning!
